SearchMash (www.searchmash.com) is a test site for different search engine layouts and features. It is released by Google and they use it as their playground for their new ideas as well as collecting data on what users find useful.
If you ask me there is nothing special or great about it. The colors are too bland and the search experience is nothing like that from Google.com.

I agree with you about it being "bland". That said, what I really like about SearchMash is the image preview in the right coluum of search results. Thanks for your post and letting me know about SearchMash. Prior to reading your post, I had never heard of it.
I find that very interesting. That is exactly the way I felt about the image previews as well. They made it a lot easier to visualize what the search term means.
What they have labeled as their feature category, is actually a little survey and one of their questions is pertaining to those images on the side.
